A story is told that two sacred twins lead their ancestors to Ako, the magical white rock which became Sky City, or the pueblo of Acoma. The twins also discovered and shared with the Acoma people, the whitest, finest clay in the southwest. One of oldest continuously occupied settlements in the United States produces this pure white clay decorated in red and black and has set the standard of Acoma pottery ever since the 18th century.
When a wedding has been planned, work begins on the making of this wedding vase. The vase is then presented to the happy couple as a gift. Both the bride and groom each drink from one of the double spouts on the vase during the exchange of the wedding vows, and take the vase with them as a memento of their special day.
