One of the most beautiful and treasured forms of Moroccan woodwork is that done by the zawwaga, or wood painter. The popular saying in Morocco that 'a piece of wood is not finished until it has been painted' is a testament to the skill of a zawwaga. Using brushes of fine donkey hair, he creates a staggering array of elaborate floral and geometric designs. The exquisitely painted designs on these tables are taken from old books of museum pieces. After painting, the table is stained with a mixture of kohl, henna, pot black, and other ingredients to give it an antique appearance.
