Turkoman rugs are produced by nomadic weavers of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan from the province of Khorassan in northeastern Iran. They are easily distinguished from Persian rugs by their red to red-brown background color, geometric patterns, and unique octagonal motifs known as gul. Weavers of these regions usually use the symmetrical Turkish double knotting style, which tends to be dense and tightly packed down. Made with 100-percent wool known as 'qaraqol', this magnificent piece features 268 knots per square inch. This 40-year-old rug is in overall excellent condition. The rug boasts an ivory background and accents in rust, gray and green.
