| Member Info ![]() Chris St. John Contact info: css_exploitz at exploitz.com 33 -- Male -- Single Web Entrepeneur, San Diego, CA, USA I'm an entrepeneur-webmaster-travel-photographer-kind of guy. I've been a webmaster since the early www days. I was the managing webmaster for MP3.com. Now I am running my own business with Exploitz.com and FreshPatents.com as the main websites. I also worked on smaller websites like freshnews.com, wearablegear.com and others. I am currently in South America--Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. I started Exploitz.com in 2002 after travelling around the USA, West/East Europe, Turkey and Morocco. Then until July 2003 enjoyed the fine beaches of La Jolla in San Diego, CA. Then after that a year in Brooklyn, NY. I like to travel, invent and meet interesting people... Homepage: FreshPatents.com Interests: Obviously travel is a big interest!! Another big interest is photography. I've used a range of cameras from 35mm film (starting out a long time ago) and digital cameras--starting with my trusty little Olympus D-370 (1st digital camera), then the Olympus 2020z, then the Fujifilm Finepix 602z... then finally the Canon Digital Rebel 300d which I'm extremely happy with. Canon EF lenses: 10-55mm kit lens (decent lens, not great), prime 50mm f1.4 (ooh I like this one), 24-100 (perfect walkaround lense, very sharp). Advantages of the 300D/10D: widely noted for having among the best resolution images, all the power of an SLR, versatile, reasonably price. Overall Canon 300D/10D seem to be best for travel, landscape, portrait. Disadvantages: sports photographers and many journalists seem to prefer Nikon for speed. The D70 has more firmware features than the 300D enabled (300D has 10D firmware with some of the features turned off, although there is a frimware hack to turn them back on). I'd love to try a medium format or large format but no money or time to tinker with one yet. I'd also like to get a small pocket 5mp+ like the Canon S50 for more discreet shooting. Dislikes: Goats head stew. Mean people. Not being able to wash clothes for weeks. Automatic weapons. Travel Gear: For long travels or camping I have a nice backpack, a Dana Designs Terraplane LTW. I try to pack as light as possible for every type of material I bring. For example, a lot of my clothing (boxers, socks, shirts) is the Patagonia lightweight capilene material. No jeans--too heavy and take forever to dry when wet. Camp towell, etc. I've traveled extensively with a laptop, using a marine dry bag wedged between some magazines for a case. I think it is worthwhile to bring a laptop if you have a small one and are doing urban travelling. I bring photography stuff as well and transfer photos to the laptop. Favorite trip so far: Buenos Aires and Rio are both incredible cities. I enjoyed Spain a lot. Morocco was a trip, very beautiful and strange country. Romania was a surprise because I wasn't expecting much but the people were very friendly and there was nice scenery. Sintra, Portugal is very nice. I always enjoy Netherlands, Amsterdam and the countryside is beautiful as well. Dream trip: I always wanted to do the Silk Road (Iran to China). But given the amount of wars and instability I don't know if that will be possible anytime soon. As far as relaxing vacations, I'm hoping for perhaps Ixtapa, Mexico or South Pacific islands at some point. Best nightlife: Between Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona I think Spain would qualify for the most interesting nightlife. Both Madrid and Barcelona have some happening clubs. Lisbon, Portugal has an interesting scene too. Romantic spot: Venice--not on the Grand Canal but on the smaller canals, with a violinist, singing and a bottle of wine. Sorrento at night. Sintra, Portugal. Notable food: Buenos Aires for the parillas (BBQ) and steaks. Spain is one of my favorites--tapas!!! jamon iberico !!! Also loved Italy for food, particularly the awesome fresh gelato and deli salami and provolone cheese grinders. Goulash in Romania and Hungary was good too. Pizza in Nice, France. I'll stop now, I'm getting hungry. Cool daytrips around San Diego, CA, USA: For hikes very close to the city (San Diego) I like Torrey Pines and Penasquitos Canyon Preserve and Iron Mountain. Further out Borrego and Temecula in the fall or spring. Of course LA is an interesting place to go for the day (about 2 hours away)...Hollywood, Melrose, Venice...the drive along the beach cities of the 101. Dangerous travel experience: Scariest experience was being stranded in the Sahara in Morocco. Jeep never came to pick me up. Guides got in a bloody fight. Besides that not much...I've had several experiences of pickpocket/con attempts but nothing too serious. | | Contributions Photo and Journal Page Contributions: Brighton is a short train ride from London, and is well worth it especially if the weather is good! It's a great park for observing desert wildlife, hiking and rock climbing. These photos are from January 2nd-3rd, 2003. Added on 2003-01-04, modified on 2004-06-20 This is the famous big wave surf spot known as Killer's at the island of Todos Santos in Baja California, Mexico. One of the largest waves ever ridden and photographed was at this spot, a monster 50ft wave. Typically the surf here is at least double the size onshore, and often higher than that. I'll be adding more pictures soon. Added on 2003-01-20, modified on 2003-05-02 These are some photos from a trip to Reno, Nevada over the New Year's holiday 2003.
