| Member Info Michael Hejtmanek Contact info: michael (at-sign) hejtmanek.com 35 -- Male -- Married Software, New York City I like to travel on planet Earth. When not working you will either find me skiing or traveling (usually somewhere that my wife and I can comfortably (warm water) scuba dive). Homepage: Michael Hejtmanek Website Interests: skiing, scuba diving, skiing, and skiing...and also raising Jackson (our son), and growing orchids...I also used to be a hard core mountain biker...maybe more of that later. Dislikes: TV, consistently bad weather (variety is good, but 10 days of straight rain - get me outta there) Travel Gear: Cameras (at least 4), tons of film, batteries, and chargers, a 4 D cell mag lite (for self defense - worth the weight), hiking boots, tevas, scuba gear. Favorite trip so far: maybe 11 hours on a bus to Tikal, Guatamala, or possibly Tsarabanjina, Madagascar, or could be skiing in Zermatt, Switzerland in August, or riding aroung in a boat in southern China, or maybe hanging out at lunchtime in Chinatown, NYC. Best nightlife: I am usually too tired from the day to hit the nightlife - man, I am a bore Romantic spot: Tsarabanjina, Madagascar - cannot be beat. It's a big private island with awesome scuba diving and great food. Dangerous travel experience: My friend Dean and I befriended the son of the area's head snake charmer/witch doctor in northern Belize - big mistake. We had some food and some drink with him and left a little drunk to find a place to stay for the night. The only place available to stay was a "hotel" (small shack) with two rooms for rent. We shared one room as the other was already rented to a couple who were making some of the loudest most primative 'sounds of love' that I had ever heard. We finally fell asleep only to find ourselves awakened in the middle of the night by people trying to break into our ramshackle rental for the night. It turns out it was the witchdoctor and all his family come to 'make us pay' for disrepecting his family. They were trying to knock over the shack ith big wooden clubs and metal objects (pipes or something - we did not spend too much time looking). It finally ended when the guy in the other room wnet out and told everyone to leave or he would "kill them all". Turns out he was the local sheriff. Thank God for law enforcement. | | Contributions Photo and Journal Page Contributions: We hit the fair. What a great way to remember what being an American is all about. There is nothing like apple pie, blue ribbon pigs, and a tractor pull to make us feel like our blood is still flowing red. Added on 2004-08-08, modified on 2004-08-09 Spent a few days in Berenty Madagascar watching the Lenurs and visiting the local Sisal (rope) plantations. Pretty primative place. Most of these photos were taken in and around a single plantation and some in a local resort. Added on 2004-07-18, modified on 2004-07-19 Photos from a Sisal PLantation in Berenty where they make rope. People working in low gear the three days we were there. There was a school for the kids but we never saw them use it for anything but hide and seek type of games. THe farm land around the plantation os for the families to grow their food in. Added on 2004-07-18, modified on 2004-07-19 These are photos from before lunch one day in the Okavango Delta at a place called Delta camp. A bit tired - got on our first plane to get here 36 hours ago. The first pics are from our last flight. Imagine flying 36 hours and then thinking you are finally there and then they tell you to get into a dug out canoe for a 1 hour canoe ride to your treehouse - what can I say - it was AWESOME! Added on 2004-07-18, modified on 2004-07-19 Driving the safari trails in Chitabe was a relaxing way to spend a few days out in the country. We stayed at Chitabe Trails camp where the tents are more luxurious than our NYC apartment. Added on 2004-07-27, modified on 2004-07-27 One of the better SCUBA diving sites I have been to in the world. A beautiful magical sleepy french island a few kilometers off the north coast of Madagascar. The sea plane is the only way in unless you have got your own boat. About 20 bungalos are spread out thinly along the white sand shores of this perfect unspoiled island. Added on 2004-07-27, modified on 2004-07-27 Serious amusement for kids in Central Park (NYC).
