Minsk is the capital city of Belarus, a former soviet republic sliced between Poland and Russia. It is a spacious and extraodinary in its way Eastern-European city. Almost fully destoyed in the WWII, it was rebuilt from scratch in the 50-ies in “Stalin architecture” style. Many visitors say it looks and feels like a communism preserve, but the city definitely has its charms, once you get to know it. (Ilya)
Chernobyl and contaminated areas
More than 20 years after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plants, vast territories in Belarus remain contaminated by radionucleids and people still suffer from the consequences of what is dubbed to be 20th century worst ecological catastroph. (Ilya)
Pictures from Belarus villages
Village Byarozauka ('byaroza' in Belarusian means 'birch tree') in Gomel area in Southern Belarus. The village is situated in Palesye region, famous for beautiful landscapes and wildlife. Palesye bogs are called 'the lungs of Europe', allegedly providing a lot of oxygen and featuring rare species of birds and animals. A large part of Belarusian Palesye is now polutted by radioactive fallout from Chernobyl, with delapidated villages but still beautifull landscapes. Nowadays Chernobyl areas have become somewhat of a tourist attraction, with 'stalkers' arranging trips to polluted areas for adventurous travellers. (Ilya)
