Buenos Aires in Sepia
Some random sepia photos of Buenos Aires including the nature reserve Costanera Norte. (chrisstjohn)
La Boca and San Telmo
Some photos from a walk through La Boca and San Telmo, two barrios (neighborhoods) in Buenos Aires. This is a working class area that was one of the original alreas of the city. La Boca is a bit poorer than other areas in the north of the city but features a variety of parks and the bightly colored houses of Caminito street (a bit touristy though). San Telmo used to be the nicest part of the century until a yellow fever plague int he early 1900s, then all the wealthy residents moved north to Barrio Norte, Recoleta and Palermo. San Telmo has fancier buildings and more cafes. Both areas are clearly marked with signs and paths for tourists. (chrisstjohn)
Obelisco, the Obelisk and Nearby Areas
A Buenos Aires gallery displaying photos from the shopping area of Avenida Santa Fe to the huge avenue of 9 de Julio leading to the giant landmark Obelisco and then to the nearby Plaza Lavalle. Also nearby are the famous shopping of Florida street (where the Galleria Pacifico picture was taken)and the Tribunales metro (subte) stop. The last photo is in a different area, near Cemetario Recoleta. (chrisstjohn)
Plaza de Mayo, Bsas
Some photos from around Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires. This is the historic center of Argentina's federal government buildings. Also it is famous for being the meeting place of the Mothers of the Disappeared and the site of major protests. (chrisstjohn)
Recoleta Cemetary
Here are some photos from Cementario de La Recoleta, Recoleta Cemetary. This is one of the main landmarks of Buenos Aires and is located in the middle of the famous barrio of Recoleta. It may seem odd that a cemetary is a major sight, but this cemetary is the resting place for many of Argentina's historical figures (from presidents to artists to the founding families). It seems that it is up to the owners of the plots to keep them up so many are in decay and seem forgotten. Some areas seem like the bad neighborhood where there perhaps was vandalism or robbery (broken glass, open crypts). One can find a variety of stories and interesting sights here--hopefully I have captured a few. More history is available in photo #23 (test description). (chrisstjohn)
