    Rio Carnival 2005 - Sambadrome

    Photos from the Sambadrome on Sunday night from Sector 3. The Sambadrome (or as said in Brazilian Portuguese sahm-BOH-dro-mo) is the focus of Carnival (spelled Carnaval in Portuguese) in Rio de Janeiro. Samba schools from throughout the city compete against each other during a 4-5 day period of parades. Each school has a unique samba anthem which they play repeatedly for 30-60 minutes as they parade through the open-air street-stadium with elaborate costumes and floats. Some of the dancers include scantily clad (or topless) Brazilian fashion models, while other locals can simply buy one of the select costumes and join the parade. Ticket prices vary, between $50-100 USD up to hundreds or even more for select seats. Sector 3, in the upper middle of the route, offered good views. It was my first trip here so I was just getting an overview...but if you are a serious photographer if you can afford it I recommend buying 2 nights--1 night on the floor in the middle of the route near the railing (expensive), 1 night higher up for aerial views (cheaper). There are different samba schools each night. Also on a third night you can forgo the Sambadrome and go to the events right next door where there is always a huge party filled almost exclusively local Cariocas. Other blocos (street parties) are held throughout the city--Lapa and Santa Theresa are good destinations within walking distance from each other in Centro.
